Have you ever felt like one part of you wants something while another part holds you back? Perhaps you know you need to set boundaries but feel guilty doing so, or you want to make a change yet find yourself repeating familiar patterns
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a compassionate way to understand these inner conflicts. Rather than viewing certain thoughts, feelings, or reactions as problems to eliminate, IFS helps us explore the different parts of ourselves and the roles they may have developed to protect us.
Through curiosity, self-compassion, and greater awareness, we can begin to understand these patterns and create space for meaningful change.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-informed therapeutic approach based on the understanding that we all have different parts of ourselves. You might recognize a part that worries, one that criticizes, another that avoids conflict, or one that works hard to keep everything under control.
In IFS, these parts aren't viewed as flaws or problems to eliminate. Instead, we explore how they developed, what they're trying to protect, and what they may need.
IFS also emphasizes the Self—a core capacity for curiosity, compassion, calm, and clarity. As we develop a greater understanding of our internal experiences, we can begin relating to ourselves with less judgment and greater compassion.
IFS therapy is a collaborative process that invites you to slow down and become curious about your internal experiences. Rather than trying to push away difficult emotions or change how you feel, we'll explore the different parts of yourself that may be influencing your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.
During our sessions, I may guide you in noticing a particular emotion, identifying the part of you experiencing it, and exploring what that part is trying to communicate or protect you from. We may also work with parts that feel critical, anxious, overwhelmed, or hesitant about change.
You remain in control of what you choose to explore. Our work moves at a pace that feels appropriate for you, with an emphasis on developing self-compassion, understanding protective patterns, and strengthening your connection with yourself.
Getting to know yourself is a place to begin. You don't have to understand all of your internal patterns or know exactly what you want to work on before beginning IFS therapy. Curiosity about your experiences is enough to start exploring.
I offer a free 10–15 minute phone consultation where we can discuss what brings you to therapy, answer your questions about Internal Family Systems (IFS), and explore whether my approach feels like a good fit for your needs.
